African ideology
is largely manifested in cults that aim to increase the life force
of the tribal community together with that of the crops, cattle
and game upon which it depends. One of the chief methods of accomplishing
this is through ritual dance and the main appurtenance of the dance
is the mask.
When a man wears a mask
in honour of a particular spirit he is no longer himself but has
temporarily been transformed to become that spirit.
